ROME AD 68 Article Illustrations
Client: Focus on the Family - Clubhouse Magazine
Project: Clubhouse asked me to research and reproduce Rome AD 68 in 3-D. It was a monumental task and took a couple of months from start to finish, but It was a wonderful learning experience. It became quite a challenge to figure out which buildings were there, which ones were not and what the style of the architecture was. Most literature and illustrated histories concentrate on the hight of the empire, so It took a while to get a good picture of AD 68 at the end of Nero's rule. Some of it is pure guesswork due to little surviving information, but the overall feel is fairly accurate. Keep in mind that this was done long before Poser existed and that it was produced on a Mac IIfx, so the structures had to be far more simplistic than my current technology affords. The project called for a number of small illustrations throughout a multi-spread story along with a two page spread illustration of an overhead shot of the whole city populated by cartoon characters (by Ron Wheeler). The story itself was one of those "choose your way" stories where the reader makes a decision at the end of each section of the story and skips to the section that corresponds to their choice. It was great fun and a lot of work.
